With community being a core pillar for Bayleys Gisborne, it was an easy decision for agents Stephen Thomson and Simon Bousfield to say yes to becoming Athletic’s titanium sponsor.
The real estate group came on board in early 2022 and the club's grounds are now known as Bayleys Athletic Park.
Stephen says in simple terms their company is intertwined with its community, just like clubs such as Athletic. Their brand promise is to facilitate a real estate journey, providing every opportunity to gain the best result for their clients while still staying true to their community.
“Athletic Club provides so much to the Wairoa area with its broad scope of codes and touch points across all age groups,” says Stephen.
“Sports clubs have long been the fabric of provincial NZ and the heartbeat of these rural areas. They foster inclusivity, promote wellbeing, and allow families to come together with shared interests and values.”
As well as its support of Athletic, Bayleys Gisborne is involved in a broad range of sponsorship across many different groups, charities and entities. When Athletic approached them for sponsorship, Simon says they presented a great proposal that outlined a real relationship and partnership of mutual benefit to both parties.
“The community hub of Athletic typifies what we seek to engage with and support” says Stephen.
“The committee are also a real asset to the club and work hard to create opportunities for Bayleys to be involved.”

FOOTBALL MAIN CODE SPONSOR
With a company slogan of “your people, your solution, you’re sorted”, it was an easy decision for QRS to come on board as a code sponsor for Athletic.
QRS has been supporting the club since 1995, offering various forms of sponsorship along the way. This has included supporting the football team, purchasing the timber for the deck recladding, and sealing and line marking the carpark and driveway. When the club brought a formal proposal to QRS to be a main code sponsor in 2022, they jumped at the chance.
“Wairoa Athletic has a great professional and social structure and QRS is proud to be associated with them,” says Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Harker.
“When QRS is approached for sponsorship, we always focus on youth, community and local first, and Athletic has them all. Besides the personal friendships with Athletic Club and team members, QRS supports Athletic because of its multi-code evolvement, the age range of its code participants (toddlers to elderly) and its year-long use as a club through all the seasons.”
It is important to QRS to give back to its community and the company highly recommends becoming a sponsor of Athletic.
“QRS is a locally based company that employs locals and if the community supports us, it is only fair that where we can, we support the community,” says Jeremy.

RUGBY MAIN CODE SPONSOR
Rugby is a deep passion for Blake Charteris and wherever life has taken him, he has always joined the local club. So, when he and wife Sarah came to Wairoa in 2011, they became part of the Athletic family. Blake enjoyed several seasons, earning his five-year players blazer and making life-long friends along the way. But when the couple started Charteris Choppers in 2016, the helicopter pilot had to make some decisions about his rugby.
“I was getting a bit older and with running our own business, I really couldn’t afford the risk of an injury that affected my ability to fly,” says Blake.
“I was gutted, I love my code, but I knew I also couldn’t afford the time out to play.” But the couple were reluctant to give up their involvement with the club and when the opportunity came up to sponsor the rugby team, they saw it as the ideal fit.
“The club gave us a lot when we first moved here and with a young family, we see so much value in supporting something that not only benefits the community but our kids,” says Blake.
“Sport is so important and so are these small-town clubs like Athletic and we love that our kids can be part of that. What Athletic continues to do, it's awesome culture and how they keep evolving over time, how could you not be proud to be backing that.”

Coming on board as sponsor for Athletic JAB was the perfect opportunity for Roz and Michael Thomas to give back to their community.
The couple farm in Wairoa and have been operating Tuhara Harvest since the early 2000s. They have also raised their three daughters here.
Roz and Michael were approached to sponsor junior rugby in 2023 and felt it was a great way of supporting a community that has been their home for so many years.
“Clubs like Athletic are a great way of bringing communities together socially and it has a long history in Wairoa,” says Michael.
“We haven’t had a sponsorship opportunity like this before and we have really enjoyed supporting the junior rugby players this season.”
The Thomas family has had a long association with the club with Michael playing rugby for the under 21s as a teenager and while he was home on holidays from university. His father Paul also played for the side.

Boasting two squash courts at the front of our building meant we had the opportunity to partner with two more amazing local businesses.
And so we did!
Okare Station and Cricklewood Angus are farms based in the Wairoa District. Okare is expertly farming sheep and beef cattle while Cricklewood proudly produces New Zealand Angus stud bulls for the market. Although they decided to sponsor Athletic fairly recently, they've had direct ties to the club for many years, so the decision to partner up felt like the right step to take.
Squash is a popular sport and happens to be our largest code in terms of player numbers. Becoming squash code sponsors has meant that Earl and Kirsty Twigley (Okare Station) and Humphry Bayly (Cricklewood Angus) have become an integral part of the club. Accordingly, we have named both courts in honour of our partnerships:

Back on board as a sponsor after many years, we're beyond excited to be reunited with Osler's Bakery.
For over 115 years Osler's has been serving up baked goods with their award-winning pies becoming a staple food. But in September 2024 they entered a new chapter when Sarah Johansen, a 5th generation Osler, took over ownership and operation to continue the family legacy. And guess what? Sarah has been a loyal Athletic netball player since netball burst back into life a few years ago!
But the Osler's legacy stretches far beyond their main street premises and right into the heart of our club. Sarah has been an Athletic member for many years, starting off as an avid hockey player when she was young and now a trusted GD (goal defence) on the netball courts. And she's not the only one in her family to have pledged their loyalty to Athletic in the past, through both memberships and sponsorships.
As Sarah is committed to bringing fresh energy to the main street business, we are excited to partner up and having that unmistakable Osler's spirit within us as we take the court.
