Friday Night Squash Relay Competition Squash is a quick and explosive game. Add a relay component to the mix where you don't have to wait for your opponent to enter the court to start playing, and what you get is a hilariously hectic night of fun! Quick serves, tricky but great outfits, blocking entry to the court, hiding the ball (or adding a second ball) - some of this stuff you can't make up. Our players went all in! Thank you to everyone who entered and dressed up but more importantly, to everyone who played their hearts out in true Athletic spirit. And as always, a massive thank you to Alyssa Deam for cooking her delicious burgers, and our volunteers for ensuring the night ran smoothly. Check out the results below. Oh, and some great rugby matches of course. It was so lovely having everyone play at Bayleys Athletic Park, thank you to all the travelling teams for visiting us. A mixed bag of results across our teams with some wins, losses and a draw. All players earning a sausage and drink after giving it everything on the field. Senior Netball Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic Black headed into round 3 low on numbers, with a few players out due to injury. With Athletic White playing at the same time, they were unable to find any extra subs. The 8 players took to the courts knowing it was going to be tough, mentally and physically. A rough and ready Panthers team was waiting, ready for the challenge. It was goal for goal most of the game, high intensity and no breaks. Maddy Taylor taking a lot of the pressure, and rising to the challenge, filling in at Centre for the majority of the game. Defence was working tirelessly, both on defence and attack. Attack kept things steady with Angel Hammond in Wing Attack steering the ship, precise passing and a high work load, the goals kept ticking over. Going into the 4th quarter things were still even, neither team losing ball, all we needed was one turn over. The moment came with Jess Crawford getting a very important defensive rebound towards the end of the quarter. The team was able to successfully bring the ball down and score, with our centre pass to follow. The girls held on to the lead and won the game 27-29. A few tired girls but we are all stoked to get our first win on the board for 2026, and during Club Weekend no less! Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend saw Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White take on Nuhaka Misfitz in a fast-paced and competitive match, going down 21–27. The girls came out strong and held the lead for most of the game, but unfortunately ran out of puff in the final quarter. Defensively, the team worked hard all over the court, with Libby and Sophie making some great defensive plays and applying plenty of pressure. A special mention also goes to our shooters, who worked tirelessly in the circle and held their own against tough defence throughout the game. Player of the Day went to Sky Cox, who had an outstanding game before unfortunately picked up an injury. We hope to see her back out on court next week. Pictured below: Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic Black & Athletic White during Club Weekend.  Senior Rugby Only our second home game this season during Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend, hosting Ngatapa. Charteris Chopper Athletic Rugby started slowly against a strong Ngatapa side. Ngatapa opened the scoring early with a penalty conversion before Athletic found some momentum and began creating opportunities with ball in hand. A strong attacking play led to Sid Drinkrow crossing for Athletic’s first try. At halftime, Ngatapa held a narrow 11–8 lead. The second half was a tough tussle, with both teams battling hard to gain the advantage. Ngatapa eventually gained the upper hand, although Athletic continued to fight back. Midway through the second half, Will Taylor scored for Athletic, with Wade Perrett adding the conversion. Despite a determined effort from Athletic, Ngatapa came away with the 28–20 victory. Joe Hansen was named Player of the Match after another outstanding performance for Athletic. QRS Athletic Football hosted Shockers Gold on an absolute stunning day for a football match. Shockers showed why they've been one of the top teams in Gisborne's Tairāwhiti Division One competition by setting the tone early, scoring 3 first half goals. Athletic proved to be tough to get past at times and managed to get a goal back just before halftime. Keeper Mark Anderson cleared the ball after a great save, getting it to Tom Rowley-Westwood, who found Ahmed Hamada to net his first ever goal for the club. Halftime score: 1-3 to Shockers Gold. The second half started and Athletic looked to keep momentum going, starting strong by scoring first from a brilliant throw in by Andrew Langdon who found captain Ben Blake, who turned and passed to Mike Hardie who screamed it past the Shockers keeper in the bottom left of the goal. Shockers were no easy feat, proving their experience in 1st Division footy, managing to score a further 3 unanswered points off broken play. Athletic firing straight back however and scoring through the boot of Jared Olsen, making it 3-6. Then, Athletic earned a corner which captain Ben Blake took and Mike Hardie, hungry for a second goal, managed a good connection, only for the cross bar to save it for Shockers. Another corner taken by Andrew Langdon who, in his words "absolutely shanked it", caught everyone napping while Jared Olsen put it in the net for Athletic's 4th and final goal. The win went to Shockers Gold with a 4-6 score. Player of the day: Grant Young. Goal scorers: Ahmed Hamada, Mike Hardie, and Jared Olsen (x 2). Jared, in just his second game back after a 20-year hiatus, has taken the lead in Athletic's top goal scorers for 2026. Big thanks goes to everyone that helped make this weekend special for our club. Mercantile Squash Friday night #2 was another great one! Our leaders have changed with Smithy Motorcycles accelerating into the lead with a big win over Slort Sports. Other big wins included Racquet Squad over The Wishing Stars. Check out the results below: Pickering Cabinet Makers bt. Pensioners 12 - 9 Smithy Motorcycles bt. The Wishing Stars 15 - 3  Junior Rugby Winter is here as round two was chilly and rainy, but everyone got out there regardless! The Junior team had a bye but we got double Athletic action in the Rippa grade when Black and Stripes took the field together. Check out the results below: Rippa Athletic Black (6) vs Athletic Stripes (14) YMP Tangitu () vs Athletic White () Junior Bye Primary Tapuae Big Baldy's () vs Athletic () Senior Netball It was a wet start on Saturday morning for Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic Black. There’s nothing like a bit of water on the court to have the girls questioning the grip on their shoes and warming their joints to save themselves from (more) injuries. Athletic Black braved the cool morning against Mahia and, in the first quarter, fought, showing good potential and maintaining most of the ball possession. Mahia’s tactical changes kept the ladies on their toes whilst Athletic maintained strong pressure in the centre court, Teri at Centre maintaining 110% energy for the entirety of the game. Claire and Becky made multiple intercepts, opportunities for more goals at the attack end of the court. Angel cleared an amazing goal just after the buzzer, which unfortunately wasn’t counted, leaving Athletic 1 point behind with a 30-29 win to Mahia. Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White took on Panthers Te Rito in a hard-fought and competitive match, finishing in a 14-all draw. The girls came out strong in the opening quarter, taking an early 7–5 lead thanks to accurate shooting from Grace Young and Sarah Spicer. Skye Cox made an impressive debut for the team, picking up key interceptions and making her presence known across the court from the opening whistle. A huge effort from Ebony Rore in Centre, who worked tirelessly all game alongside captain Alyssa Deam through the midcourt, while Sarah Spicer continued to create strong attacking options in Goal Attack. Together with Skye Cox and Grace Cooney, the girls disrupted Panthers’ flow and worked hard to transition the ball smoothly down the court. Defensively, Athletic White dug deep all game. Courtney Hayward delivered a standout performance with crucial intercepts and by shutting down multiple attacking plays, while Player of the Day Grace Cooney kept Panthers’ main shooter quiet for much of the game with her relentless work rate and determination. While there’s still plenty to work on heading into next week, it’s great to see the combinations starting to build and the team growing stronger together each game. Awesome effort from all the girls. Senior Rugby On Saturday, Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby played their first home game of the season against Mahia. The first half was a tight battle, with both sides showing strong defence. Mahia had one good opportunity to score, but Athletic held firm to keep the game locked at 0–0 at halftime. Mahia struck first in the second half with a converted try to take the lead. Athletic responded strongly, putting together some great phases of play which saw Gabriel David score his first try for Athletic. The game remained close throughout and provided a great spectacle for everyone watching. Full time score: Wairoa Athletic (5) – Mahia (13). Player of the Day: Joe Hansen. This week, Wairoa Athletic host Ngatapa at Bayleys Athletic Park for the Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend. Senior Football For round 6 of the Tairāwhiti Men's Championship, QRS Athletic Football traveled up to Gisborne to take on defending division 1 champions Thistle Bobcats. It was a tough battle, Athletic stepped up and fought hard to make it a tough game for the home side. Athletic's defence was solid holding Bobcats to 1 goal for 30 minutes while having a chance to equalise. Bobcats managed to get a 3-0 halftime lead however. Athletic's spirit was on full display holding Bobcats to only 1 goal in the second half. Goal Keeper Mark Anderson put on a performance with plenty of saves and even saving a penalty. On a beautiful sunny morning our juniors got their first matches for 2026 under their belt. Lovely seeing their smiling faces as they run around the field. Check out the results below: Rippa Athletic Black (8) vs Tapuae Rossco's (6) Athletic White (3) vs Wairoa Primary School (10) Athletic Stripes (5) vs Te Mahia School (5) Junior Athletic (17) vs Tapuae Little Taniwha (1) Primary Athletic (6) vs St Joseph School (11) Senior Netball On Saturday Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic Black had a tough start to the season, coming up against a strong TKT. The girls started the game with a bang, seamless connection and converted turnovers - couldn’t have had a better start. TKT were rattled and began putting their foot down. Unfortunately we didn’t get the win, going down by 6 points. However there were some great passages of play, led by our tireless captain Becky. Back to training to come back stronger and ready to take on our next game! Final score: Athletic (29) - TKT (35). Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White took on Nuhaka Rangatahi in a hard-fought and competitive game. Although the result didn’t fall our way, every player showed amazing determination, teamwork, and effort from start to finish. There were some standout performances across the court. Sarah Spicer worked tirelessly in Goal Attack, creating strong attacking opportunities in the circle. Sophie Mickelson was outstanding defensively, making crucial plays and coming away with a couple of impressive interceptions. Alyssa Deam stepped into Wing Attack, a position she doesn’t normally play, and did an awesome job feeding into the circle and keeping the attacking end flowing. While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, there were still plenty of positives to take from the game, along with a few things for us to work on at training on Thursday. Huge effort from all the girls and plenty to build on heading into next week. Final score: Athletic (10) - Nuhaka Rangatahi (18). Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby put in a determined performance against YMP Gisborne in a hard-fought clash, eventually going down 19–10. Athletic started the first half strongly with the wind at their backs and looked dangerous early on, creating several quality attacking opportunities. One of those plays paid off when Kasey Chemis crossed under the posts for a well-worked try. YMP responded with a try of their own to keep the match tight. Just before halftime, Moss Doran calmly slotted a penalty goal to give Athletic a 10–5 lead heading into the break. The second half saw YMP come out firing, with the home team managing to score two converted tries to swing the momentum their way. Athletic continued to battle hard and created chances throughout the half, but unfortunately missed a few crucial opportunities that could have changed the result. Despite the loss, it was an outstanding effort from the Athletic men in an entertaining and physical contest. Final score: YMP Gisborne (19) - Athletic (10). Player of the Day points: Will Taylor - 3 points Fergus Casey - 2 points Wade Perrett - 1 point Senior Football Round 5 saw QRS Athletic Football host Wainui Salty Dogs in what was a fairly even battle across the pitch. Athletic opened the scoreboard through a brilliant play from Raihania Edwards-Hammond early on. Wainui battled back, slipping one past Athletic's keeper, making the score 1 all. Athletic had multiple scoring chances but just couldn't capitalise. Playing into the sun and wind hindered Athletic and benefited Wainui, when their keeper booted the ball from inside his own box all the way across the pitch, bouncing over the Athletic keeper. This made it 2-1 to Wainui going into the halftime break. The second half began and Athletic was fairly dominant, looking to equalise and managing to do so through the boot of Tom Rowley-Westwood. The battle continued until the final whistle but neither side managed to create the match-winning opportunity, ending in a 2 all draw. Athletic had many positives to take out of this game. Even the Player of the Day vote ended in a 3-way tie between Raihania Edwards-Hammond, Grant Young and Mike Hardie. Next weekend Athletic travel up to Gisborne's Childers Road Reserve 1 to take on defending Division 1 Champs Thistle Bobcats, with an earlier kickoff at 12:30pm. |
