Mercantile Squash A busy and exciting Friday night with lots of support! The top teams of both pools lost their matches which means the leaderboard has tightened up! There are still 3 rounds left to play before we head into the semi finals, so anything can happen. Check out the results below: Emergency Smash Services bt. Both teams had two games this weekend. Oslers Bakery Athletic White started their second round in the gold grade. The first game against TKT was physically challenging as they placed constant pressure throughout the court. TKT came out on top 44-13. In the second game, YMP Raupunga’s defence was relentless. White persevered using tight marking and strong body presence to stifle attacking flow, however YMP shooters were on their game. YMP took the win 33-13. Players of the day for Oslers Bakery Athletic White 3: Teri, 2: Courtney, 1: Amanda. Oslers Bakery Athletic Black took the court against Mahia Mai Tawhiti and lost 19-14. The low scoring game saw plenty of turned over ball and action in the mid-court. Black took time to build momentum in the shooting circle. Players of the game 3: Georgia Broad, 2: Jahnaka McIntyre, 1: Josie Mulgrew. For game two, Nuhaka White started the way they planned to finish, physical and fierce. It proved difficult for Black to manage resulting in a 28-9 loss. Players of the game 3: Jahnaka McIntyre, 2: Georgia Broad, 1: Sarah Johansen. Netball takes a break for two weeks over the school holidays and resumes Saturday 19th July. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby took on Mahia. Overnight rain made for some wet underfoot conditions. Mahia opted to kick off and the game was underway, the opposition put the pressure on from the get go causing handling errors and in no time Mahia had 4 unanswered tries. Athletic managed to dig deep just before halftime and Kalaney Ruwhiu scored close to the posts. Three starting forwards were injured in the opening 20 minutes meaning the bench had to put in some serious minutes. Mahia had a very comfortable lead going into the second half and Athletic had some serious work to do to get back into the game. The tone was set with 2 back to back tries from Daniel Knubley getting the black and white back into the game. Another try saw the scores closing up but Mahia were too resilient, scoring twice in the last 15 minutes of the game pushing their lead back out. On the final play of the game, James Fulford scored in the corner closing the scores off at 36-27. Players of the day were 1. Inoke Raivalita 2. Stephen Foley 3. Will Rouse. Athletic rugby face Mahia again at Kaiuku in the semi final this weekend. Two training sessions this week and some returning players will hopefully be enough to get the win and hold on to their title for another week. Senior Football Saturday's match up against Gisborne United 2nd's was the final game of the first round. QRS Athletic Football were looking to continue building momentum to finish the first round strong so we can start the second round with confidence. The first half was a very dominant display of Athletic's attacking and United's defence canceling each other out. Athletic managed to score from a corner cross sent in by Jason Smith who found Jonny Hardie, Athletic 1-0. The second half began and Athletic were looking to be more accurate with the chances that were created, and managing to do so with Tom Rowley-Westwood getting the second goal making it 2-0. Followed by Karan Singh adding to his tally by charging down the united keepers clearance kick taking Athletic's lead to 3-0. Athletic kept building good phase play and managed a 4th goal through the boot of Michael Hardie who sent a screamer from the sideline who reckons it was a cross but found the back of the net instead. Athletic didn't stop there, securing a 5th and final goal from a brilliant pass from Mike Hardie that found captain Ben Blake who finished it off, Athletic 5-0. Full-time QRS AthleticFootball (5) and Gisborne United 2nd's (0). Player of the day: Harry Champion. We now await conformation of what the second round fixtures are going to be. Athletic finishing fifth means we'll be competing in the top half of Tairawhiti Division Two. We are also still in contention for the Chris Moore Cup where we made the semi-final, which is to be played at a later date.

Mercantile Squash The first matches of the second round of pool play are done and dusted. Players have been braving the cold Friday nights and put on some great squash. All points scored in this second round are added to the total scores of the first round, and with teams taking bye's again this means there are some changes to the points table. Farmlands 12-9  Senior Football This Saturday saw QRS Athletic Football travel up to Gisborne Harry Barker Reserve 2 to take on HSOB Eels in a game where both teams needed a win to keep the season hopes alive. The first half was all Eels with Athletic having to defend the majority of the half in a tightly contested match, it was Athletic however who was able to score against the run of play with Tom Rowley-Westwood finishing a well executed cross from a corner taken by Jason Smith, Athletic 1-0. The second half began and QRS Athletic Football started with intent, gaining momentum from kickoff and managed to find the back of the net a second time through Jonny Hardie who is on a hot streak of scoring in the 2025 season, Athletic 2-0. The game continued back and fourth with Eels playing with more intent to get themselves back into the game, earning themselves a penalty where Michael Hardie miss timed his tackle. Eels 1 Athletic 2. With 10 minutes to play Athletic players stepped up to hold off any shots HSOB Eels threw at them to take the victory 2-1 on the road. Player of the Day: Raymond Hawley. Next weekend we travel back up to Harry Barker to take on Gisborne United in the final of Round 1. At the after-match function at the High School Old Boys clubrooms, the team was presented with a special shirt as HSOB are celebrating turning 100 this year. Huge congratulations! Mercantile Squash We finished up the first round of pool play on Friday night. Another great night of squash with some solid matches. Based on the points from the first round, all teams are now re-seeded into new pools for the second round. In Pool A are Pickering Cabinet Makers, AFFCO Stingers, Waikare, Emergency Smash Services and Pensioners. Our juniors played all their games at Lambton Square over the weekend, while Rippa Stripes had a bye. It was pretty chilly but the rain stopped just in time for the 9 o'clock games. Oslers Bakery Athletic White played the dynamic and aerial TKT. The first half was closely matched, however unexpected injuries caused several players to play out of position. Players adapted quickly, but the girls unable to match the accurate shooting of TKT and went down 42-25. Players of the match 3, Clare Cvitanovich 2, Sam Luka 1, Alice Wilson. With this result Oslers Bakery Athletic White placed 6th in the gold grade and are looking forward to what round 2 has in store. Meanwhile, Oslers Bakery Athletic Black faced TKT Rangatahi who are playing like their seniors team, dynamic and aerial. TKT Rangatahi have only had one loss this season and were successfully held at bay by a hardworking team drawing 23 all. This was the final game of round 1 seeing Oslers Bakery Athletic Black third on the table out of six teams for the silver grade. Players of the match: 3, Georgia Broad 2, Suzy Chrystal 1, Paige Bentley. With back to back games, Oslers Bakery Athletic Black then took the court immediately and faced Nuhaka Blue for the beginning of the second round. It turned to be a very physical match which built as Black gained momentum winning the game 24-14. Players of the match: 3, Suzy Chrystal 2, Grace Young 1, Jan Little. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby boarded the bus to Gisborne to take on Ngatapa, the toss was lost and we were left to receive the first kickoff. Ngatapa came out firing scoring the first try off an intercept pass, Athletic answered with an unconverted try from Jonty Le Lievre and another just before halftime going into the break with Athletic leading 10-7. The first half was a back and forward battle with neither team wanting to give up any ground, strong ball carrying and dominant tackles. After a talk at halftime from coach Moss Doran, the attack was changed and a first try from the black and white was scored not long after the second half whistle, after that the tries came one after another taking the final score out to 46-7 showing a strong second half performance and the perfect way to send off George Twigley and Harry Newman who played their last games of the season. Players of the day were 3. Will Collier 2. Sid Drinkrow 1. Jonty Le Lievre. Senior Football Round 9 of the Tairawhiti Division Two competition had QRS Athletic Football host Pro Roofing Thistle in an entertaining match where the field under wet conditions favoured no side, and the return of a former Athletic Veteran set for a bit of banter between the two sides. Both teams struggled to play any kind of structured footy, both sides made changes early on but it was Athletic who struck first through a cross from captain Ben Blake where Thistle's keeper fumbled it and Athletic midfielder Tom Rowley-Westwood pounced on it to finish it off, Athletic 1-0. Thistle didn't stay down for long returning the favour, catching the Athletic defenders napping and shooting from out wide scoring a screamer, levelling the score 1-1. After Athletic keeper Aaron Ioane managed multiple saves, Thistle managed to crack another in before halftime taking a 2-1 halftime lead. The second half began pretty similar to the first, Athletic came out firing and scoring first through Raihania Edwards-Hammond who cleaned up yet another fumble from Thistle's Keeper, Athletic 2-2. Thistle were a quality side who wouldn't stay down from everything Athletic threw at them, managing to put pressure on Athletic in the mud pit and scoring a brace of goals before an accidental own goal helped seal the victory for the visitors. Athletic kept fighting until the end where Josh Cowan was able to scramble a 3rd and final goal for the black and white, final score 5-3 to Thistle. Highlight of the match was when Michael Hardie was yellow carded for a Hollywood dive from former Athletic player Shannon (Blocker) Crane. Next weekend Round 10 sees QRS Athletic Football travel up to Gisborne to take on High-school Old Boys Eels in hopefully some better weather for the long weekend. No Mercantile, instead we celebrated the Friday night of our Club Weekend with a fun team relay competition. Twelve teams entered and they all had so much fun on the courts. Matches lasted for 21 minutes, with each member of a team playing for 7 minutes. So no breaks - 2 players come off, the next 2 go on and straight into it! Wigs, batons, tutu's and tool belts didn't make it any easier, but it was hard to hear the score over all the laughter. It was a great night. Congratulations to all the winners! A huge thank you to YMP and St. Joseph's School for joining us during Club Weekend. The kids played some great games and provided some complimentary belly slides in the mud! We finished off with special Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend Certificates and prizes for all POD's. Oslers Bakery Athletic White played both Tapuae teams back to back in the gold grade. Under harsh weather conditions they were able to get their first win against Tapuae Ruataumata 27-16. Fresh for the court, Tapuae Ruahine played a physical game which white unfortunately lost 28-21. Our women should be extremely proud of our efforts the past few weekends with back to back netball games. Their commitment to one another and positive attitudes are a testament to the spirit of the game and club culture. Player of the day 3: Sarah Spicer, 2: Becky Donovan, 1: Amanda Carr. Oslers Bakery Athletic Black also had a double header. First game against YMP Ake Ake Ake and won 14-6. Defence & mid-court worked hard to turn over ball. A fatigued team took the court for a second game with no subs against Mahia Mai Tawhiti. Black had found rhythm but experience on the Mahia side proved hard to beat. 24-11 to Mahia Mai Tawhiti. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby took on YMP from Raupunga in cold, wet conditions for the Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend. Athletic started strong, scoring early and putting pressure on YMP from the kickoff. Both teams had to grind through tough conditions, and defence was a big factor on both sides. Final score: 19–5 to Athletic. A solid team effort in testing weather, and a good, hard game that honoured the occasion well. Players of the day were Stephen Foley (3), Jonty Le Lievre (2) and James Steele (1). Afterwards, in a warm and buzzy clubroom, Stephen Foley was awarded the Bill Meek Memorial Trophy for Senior Rugby POD, and Vaughan Goldsmith was awarded his blazer. Huge congratulations! Senior Football The Bill Meek Memorial Club Weekend arrived with challenging wet weather conditions on Saturday that favoured no side. Football had a bye in the Tairawhiti Division Two competition, so instead hosted game 1 of Veterans vs Rookies in the best of 3 series. Rookies started the game strong with momentum through quick play with rookie players Harvey Kavanagh and Raihania Edwards-Hammond, creating havoc for the Veterans backline. Keeper Mike Hardie made a strong save from a sharp shot at goal by Harvey Kavanagh. Rookies were relentless on attack finally cracking the score opener through Raihania Edwards-Hammond, Rookies 1-0. Veterans held off the first quarter trailing 1-0, the second quarter begun and again all momentum was with Athletic's Rookies, keeping the pressure on using their youth well and securing another goal through a brilliant play from Karan Singh, Rookies 2-0. The Veterans looked scrambled out there holding on for dear life in tough conditions and looking to have no answer. Karan Singh completed a brace before halftime taking the Rookies lead to a strong 3-0. The third quarter began and Veterans had nothing left to lose so went out firing, putting pressure on the Rookies backline. Libby Young and Marrit Kirkenier making strong attacks but the Rookies' Alyssa Anderson and Alyssa Deam holding them off well. Vets kept trying their luck, finally breaking through and getting their first goal right on the whistle through Mike Hardie securing their first goal, score 3-1. The fourth quarter began and a big momentum shift happened. The Veterans with their backs against the wall come out firing and, believe it or not, miracles do happen as Hira Campbell tricked the Rookies keeper by faking a shot causing him to dive early then scoring for the Veterans making it 3-2. Game back on! The Veterans showcased their experience of never giving up until that final whistle, Mike Hardie securing a brace for himself causing a tie between the two sides 3-3. All pressure now on the Rookies but they didn't give in, they kept the pressure on but to no prevail. Mike Hardie completed a second half hat-trick securing a 4-3 lead with only seconds remaining. A comeback completed as the final whistle was blown and game 1 going to the Veterans. QRS Athletic Football would like to thank everyone that participated and made the day such a success and loads of fun. Game 2 of the series to be confirmed at a later date.
