Mercantile Squash After seven competitive rounds of round robin play, the Wairoa Athletic Mercantile Squash competition has found its semi-finalists! There has been plenty of quality squash, close contests and great sportsmanship throughout the season, with every point proving valuable. Smithy Motorcycles have been the standout team all season, finishing well clear at the top of the table after a dominant round robin campaign. Here are the results of round 7: Pickering Cabinet Makers bt. Farmlands 10 - 8 Smithy Motorcycles bt. The Wishing Stars 15 - 9 Emergency Smash Services bt. Racket Squad All Hui 15 - 6 Slort Sports bt. Pensioners 10 - 9 The match of the round belonged to Mike (Racquet Squad All Hui) and Alyssa (Emergency Smash Services), who produced an absolute thriller. After an outstanding battle, Alyssa edged home 41–40 in one of the closest matches of the year. Congratulations to Jason Smith, who was the winner of this week's raffle. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby travelled to Ngatapa for the final match of the second round, facing tough opposition in challenging, muddy conditions. The game got off to a fast start, with Ngatapa opening the scoring through an early penalty goal. Athletic responded with determination, working hard to stay in the contest, but Ngatapa crossed for two converted tries during the first half. Just before the break, Athletic got on the scoreboard when first five Wade Perritt slotted a penalty goal, leaving the halftime score at 17–3 to Ngatapa. Athletic came out with renewed energy in the second half, controlling possession and building pressure through several strong phases of play. Their efforts were rewarded when Apensia Cava finished off a superb team movement with a brilliant runaway try down the wing. Although the conversion was unsuccessful, the try gave Athletic momentum and reduced the deficit. The remainder of the second half was a hard-fought battle, with Athletic producing an outstanding defensive effort to keep Ngatapa scoreless despite the difficult conditions. Unfortunately, they were unable to add any further points, and the match finished 17–8 in favour of Ngatapa. We look forward to coming back stronger next season. Senior Football On Saturday 27th June, QRS Athletic Football organised the first game of the popular Veterans vs Rookies series. The match was played in good spirits despite the muddy conditions, which benefited (or disadvantaged?) both teams by causing chaos and disruptive play (and some banter along with it). It was the Rookies who struck first, putting their team on the front foot with an amazing assist from Chris Jensen, who absolutely shanked it but managed to hit the side bar where Jared Olsen was able to put it away. Play continued through spells of rain and a hydration break, as seen during the world cup. The Veterans were looking to tie the game after great defence from the Rookies. But, not even the big puddles on the field could stop Tom Rowley-Westwood from getting the equalizer. The halftime the score was 1 - 1. At the start of the second half both teams looked to gain momentum with great displays of wet-weather footy. It was the Veterans who took a 2-1 lead though, through the boot of Tom Rowley-Westwood once again. After that, the Rookies had plenty of chances to turn things around but solid saves from keeper Phil Molina kept them out. Veterans' 3rd goal came from a simple error from Rookies keeper Aaron Ioane, who slipped up on his goal kick and found Sharn Black, who scored on his debut for the Veterans. The game didn't end there. As with any good derby, it got a bit scrappy towards the end when the legs got tired. The cards started coming out with the first yellow going to Tim Howard for a conversion-like attempt at goal. The second yellow went to Jared Olsen for completely messing up a goal attempt himself. As the field got more saturated, Mike Hardie mistimed a tackle and earned himself a red card, meaning the Veterans were down to ten players. Not even 10 minutes later they found themselves down to 9 players after another red card shown to Sharn Black for a similar offence. However, the experience of the Veterans prevailed as they held on for the last 10 minutes of the game, securing a 3-1 victory. This means the Veterans take the series lead to 1-0 in the best-of-three competition. Player of the day for the Veterans: Polly Browne with an outstanding defensive effort on debut. Players of the day for the Rookies: Tamara Olsen and Garron Bright. We finished the day at the Bayleys Athletic Park Clubrooms with burgers and the final All Whites match of the 2026 World Cup. Mercantile Squash Round 6 delivered some crucial results as teams jostled for position ahead of next week's final round-robin fixtures. The much-anticipated top-of-the-table clash saw Smithy Motorcycles continue their impressive form with a commanding 18-3 victory over Farmlands, strengthening their position at the summit of the standings. At the other end of the table, Slort Sports produced a dominant performance, defeating The Wishing Stars 18-6 to keep their campaign alive heading into the final week. With just one round-robin week remaining, the top four is beginning to take shape, but there is still plenty to play for and several teams remain in contention for semi-final spots. Every point will count as we head into next week's decisive matches. Match of the Round belonged to a family showdown between mother and daughter, Lara Deam and Alyssa Deam. In a fantastic battle that went right down to the wire, neither player could be separated, finishing with a 36-36 draw. Another round of junior sports done and dusted, with two of our Rippa teams facing each other! Another great round for Athletic with some amazing performances from our tamariki. Our defence was outstanding throughout the game, applying pressure and working effectively in the shooting circle to create turnovers. Through the midcourt, our attack fed the ball accurately and consistently into the shooters, allowing us to capitalise on scoring opportunities. It was great to see the team put into action the skills and strategies we have been focusing on at training, resulting in a well-deserved win. Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White faced off against Waiau, and with our regular shooter away, we had to make a few adjustments. Lara Deam answered the call-up to Goal Shoot, teaming up alongside our captain Alyssa Deam in the opening quarter. Sarah Spicer made an immediate impact when she took the court in the second quarter, bringing fresh energy and momentum to our side. This allowed Alyssa to move back into her preferred Wing Attack position. Grace Cooney started at Wing Defence and grew in confidence as the game went on, picking up some important interceptions and turnovers. By the third quarter, we were only down by two points. In the defensive circle, Sophie Mickelson worked hard at Goal Defence, making life difficult for Waiau’s attackers. Despite a strong performance, we were unable to come away with the win, with Waiau taking the match 16–11. Considering they’re currently top of the table in the Silver Grade, it’s a result we can still be proud of. Player of the Day honours went to Courtney Hayward, whose effort and determination shone throughout the game. The season is far from over, and we’ll be ready to go again next week. Sadly, there were no matches for Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby or QRS Athletic Football as both games did not go ahead due to defaults. Mercantile Squash With five rounds now completed and just two round-robin rounds remaining before finals, the race for the top four is still wide open. Smithy Motorcycles continue to hold their position at the top of the table, retaining their lead after another strong week. However, with two rounds still to play, there is plenty of squash left and several teams remain firmly in contention for finals spots. The match of the night saw Emergency Smash Services take on Pickering Cabinet Makers in a closely fought contest. Both teams finished with three match wins apiece and claimed one joker win each, leaving the result to be decided on countback. Emergency Smash Services edged out Pickering Cabinet Makers by the narrowest of margins, 251 points to 244, to secure the overall victory. Finally, congratulations to Steve Doole, this week's raffle winner. With only two round-robin rounds remaining, every point will be crucial as teams battle for a place in the finals. Last weekend all our teams were back at the usual Lambton Square grounds. Athletic was the duty team so we got there nice and early to set up and take our team photos. The chill quickly disappeared when our first teams got underway and we ended up with a beautiful JAB morning. Some great rips from our Rippa teams, superb tries from Junior and a solid effort from Primary against St Joseph School. Nūhaka Whetū were strong across the court and played with real determination, keeping the game close and putting pressure on us through the middle stages. We were only slightly down at half time, but the team stayed calm, connected well, and built nicely into the second half. In the second half we found our rhythm, lifted our intensity, and pulled away to finish with a well‑earned 29–21 win. A great effort and something the team can be proud of. Players of the Day: 3– Kaylah Reynolds 2– Becky Donovan 1– Teri Wathen‑Smith A special mention goes to Hannah Little, who played her first game back and delivered a strong half at GA. Wonderful to see her out there again. A proud day for the team and a great step forward. Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White took on YMP Ki Tai on June 13 in a tightly contested match, narrowly going down 26-24. The game started strongly for Athletic White, with Grace Young finding her rhythm early and sinking the first three goals of the match. Our defensive end worked tirelessly throughout the court, with Courtney Hayward once again putting in a standout performance, using her impressive reach to disrupt attacking plays and create valuable turnover opportunities. After a strong opening quarter, we lost a little momentum in the second but showed great resilience to regroup and lift the intensity again in the third. It was also fantastic to welcome Sky Cox back onto the court after a lengthy injury layoff. Captain Alyssa Deam provided steady leadership in the midcourt, feeding accurately into the shooting circle and keeping the attack moving. Player of the Day went to Ebony Rore as she was instrumental throughout the match, collecting numerous interceptions and helping drive the ball through the court. Despite the result not quite going our way, the team showed determination right through to the final whistle and can take plenty of positives from a strong team performance. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby travelled to Mahia full of energy and ready to play rugby. The first half was a tight contest, with Mahia crossing for two tries. However, Athletic stayed in the fight thanks to two penalty goals from Moss Doran. Athletic played with plenty of heart, showing outstanding defence and determination to keep the score close heading into the second half. Athletic came out strongly after the break and produced an excellent team move, which saw Kasey Chemis score a well-worked try in the corner. Mahia responded with a try of their own to keep the pressure on. Near the end of the match, Cava Apensia showed great skill and determination to score under the posts. Moss Doran added the conversion. It was a hard-fought battle between two committed sides, but Wairoa Athletic came away victorious, defeating Mahia 21–17 at full-time. Player Points: 3 Points – Wil Rouse 2 Points – Will Taylor 1 Point – Tyson Kamo Senior Football Shockers Marist defaulted earlier in the week so QRS Athletic Football had the day off, with some of the players coming out to support JAB, Netball and Rugby on a beautiful, sunny Saturday. A special mention goes to Ryan O'Sullivan who came up from the Bay to support the other codes. Ryan will soon be off to Europe for the trip of a lifetime - we hope you have the best time and we look forward to seeing you back for a Veterans vs Rookies match! Mercantile Squash The squash is getting better and better each week! Despite suffering a defeat this round, Smithy Motorcycles remain firmly on top of the ladder after going down to Pickering Cabinet Makers. The biggest mover of the week was Racquet Squad All Hui, whose emphatic victory over Slort Sports has propelled them into third place and right in the thick of the title race. With the competition now just over halfway through and three round-robin matches remaining, the race for the top spots is incredibly tight. The top seven teams are separated by just 13 points, making it anyone's game as the season heads towards the business end. The match of the round featured two of the competition's rising young stars, Jodie from Emergency Smash Services and Greta from The Wishing Stars. In a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire, Greta edged out Jodie by only a few points to claim a hard-fought victory. With every point proving crucial, the remaining rounds promise plenty of excitement as teams battle for finals positions. Farmlands bt. Pensioners 12 - 6 Racket Squad All Hui bt. With player numbers running low, the team was grateful to have Samantha Luka and Oriwia Taylor step in and assist, helping ensure the team could take the court. The game was a physical contest from the opening whistle, with plenty of body-on-body contact from both sides. Athletic Black found themselves down early, and the first half felt slightly unsettled as the team worked to find its rhythm and combinations on court. Despite the challenging start, the team remained determined and continued to work together. In the second half, Athletic Black found its groove, settled into its game plan, and began playing with greater confidence and consistency. Once the team established its flow, they were able to build momentum and take control of the match, leading to a strong finish and a well-earned victory. Final score: Athletic Black (31) vs Tapuae Te Rauhina (22) Osler's Bakery & Cafe Athletic White took on Matākainga i Te Tihi. Following the long King’s Birthday weekend break, it took us a little while to shake off the holiday mode and find our rhythm. Despite trailing at the end of the first quarter, the team remained positive and kept spirits high. The second quarter saw us settle into the game, with Sarah Spicer and centre Ebony Rore combining well through the midcourt. Defensively, Grace Cooney put into practice the skills worked on at Thursday night’s training, producing some outstanding defensive efforts. A big thank you to Clare Cvitanovich for stepping in and helping the team until Ana Nohotima was available. We were also excited to see Ana make her debut in the final quarter, bringing fresh legs and energy onto the court. Courtney Hayward applied relentless pressure to the opposition shooters and was rewarded with several well-earned turnovers. This week’s Player Of the Day went to Grace Young for her defensive pressure, along with some stellar steals and interceptions against Matākainga i Te Tihi. A special thank you to our coach, Avon McCormack, for her continued support, guidance, and dedication to the team both at training and on game day. After a hard-fought battle, Athletic White came away with a thrilling 25–24 victory. Senior Rugby Charteris Choppers Athletic Rugby travelled to Nuhaka Sport & Recreation Club on Saturday for their Club Day. Athletic started the match strongly, producing some excellent defensive efforts throughout the first half. Athletic held firm for long periods, limiting Nuhaka to just two tries. Athletic's points came through the reliable boot of Wade Perrett, who slotted a penalty goal to keep Athletic within reach at the break. The second half saw Athletic come out with renewed energy, showcasing some impressive attacking rugby. Captain Will Taylor crossed the line after a well-worked team try, rewarding a sustained period of pressure. Athletic continued to challenge the home side, and Kasey Chemis added another try to keep the contest alive. Despite Wairoa’s determined performance and never-give-up attitude, Nuhaka proved too strong on the day, securing a 33-18 victory. Player of the Day points: 1. Kasey Chemis 2. Toby Calqhoun 3. QRS Athletic Football traveled to Gisborne's Childers Road to take on Pro Roofing Thistle, still looking for their first win for the year. The boys have been putting in the work to build towards this and its showing in bits and pieces of our game, which is still a work in progress. Athletic started well, having a few good attacking opportunities but Thistle's defence was pure class, keeping us scoreless. Thistle had taken a well-executed lucky shot from the side which managed to hit both side bars and somehow, defying physics, managed to go in. Halftime score: 1-0 to Thistle. Thistle started the second half capitalising on multiple quick errors to take a demanding 3-0 lead. The boys in black fought to the very end trying to get a goal for the good effort they put in, but to no avail. Final score was Thistle (3) vs Athletic (0). Player of the Day: Andrew Langdon. We were disappointed to let that game slip but very eager to turn it around this Saturday as we look forward to hosting Shockers Marist. |
