WHAT WENT ON 11 - 12 April

On Saturday the 11th of April QRS Athletic Football traveled up to Wainui to take on Wainui Sharks in the opening round of Tairāwhiti Men's Division 1 competition. It wasn't the easiest of starts for the boys, as Athletic traveled to Gisborne with only nine players. Managing to get an extra two players just before kickoff, they started with the bare 11 men on the field. Athletic defended well, holding off for 15 minutes before conceding the first goal. Athletic stepped up a notch in defence and worked hard to make it tough for the Sharks to score. Sharks' experience in Division 1 showed as they went into the halftime break with a 4-0 lead.  The second half began and Athletic's never-give-up spirit was on full display, defending brilliantly keeping Sharks scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the second half, even managing to get on the scoreboard through the boot of Captain Ben Blake who slotted a penalty earned by teammate Karan Singh. Karan would go on and continue to compete, creating a further break and goalscoring opportunity only to be denied by the keeper. Sharks were too good at home taking an 8-1 win over us.
